On the card-mounted original print, the sisters are identified as Martha Jane Wigle (Spalding) and Eliza Spalding Warren. Martha and Eliza were daughters of Henry and Eliza Spalding, early missionaries in the Northwest.
Eliza, the eldest sister, was staying with the Whitmans in 1847, and was one of the children that survived the massacre there. As the only one who spoke Cayuse, she acted as the translator after the killings.
