I'm assuming those are real ducks, evidence of a successful hunting trip by these two men. Though incongruous in a photo studio, at least the backdrop appears to show a marshy area.

Since few hunters owned cameras, stopping off at a professional photographer would have been the only way to memorialize their haul. In this case the photographer was Orlando Hofsteater, who started his career in Vancouver, but maintained a studio in downtown Portland from 1900 through 1925.
