The town of Cascade Locks was the home of a sawmill operated by the Wind River Lumber Company, which got its name, and most of its logs, from across the Columbia in the Wind River Valley.
The town of Cascade Locks was the home of a sawmill operated by the Wind River Lumber Company, which got its name, and most of its logs, from across the Columbia in the Wind River Valley. In 1902, the Yacolt Burn, a tremendous fire, killed enough trees to keep the company's logging crews north of Carson, Washington busy for ten years harvesting what remained.
Trees were driven down Trout Creek and across the Columbia to the mill. While the mill is not visible in this photo, we can clearly see the lumber company office in detail view 1, located just to the right of the railroad tracks heading up the south bank of the larger river.
