Born about 1833 in Italy, Sam Oliver was active in taking salmon from the Columbia since at least 1875, when he put up 1200 barrels of salted salmon. In 1895, at the age of about 62, he placed an ad in the Astorian paper offering his seining grounds near Pillar Rock for sale (deeded from the State of Oregon) with a dock 100x40 feet, a newly-built house, six horses, two seines and boats.
This photo was taken about five years before that ad. It seems likely the shorter man in the middle next to the dog is Sam Oliver. He died in Woodland in 1921.
