This uncommon view was captured on Wizard Island in Crater Lake - an island most people only get to see at a distance from the rim of old Mount Mazama.
This uncommon view was captured on Wizard Island in Crater Lake - an island most people only get to see at a distance from the rim of old Mount Mazama. Our image is re-created by a hand-tinted print by Fred Kiser from about 1916.
Wizard Island is one of a number of new volcanic cones created within the mountain's crater, but it is the only one tall enough to extend above the water level. As someone once remarked, we are looking at "a crater within a crater and a lake within a lake".
