Cleetwood Canyon, located behind the current lodge, was named by William Steel because this is the location where the Cleetwood, the first boat to reach the lake, was slid down in 1886. This photo is from the Steel Excursion of 1903, and the 16 foot boat is being lowered to the lake for that party. It's an early photo by Fred Kiser, who later had a long relationship with photography at Crater Lake.
