This photo was taken shortly after the new concrete Multnomah Falls bridge opened in 1914, and not that long after the Harley-Davidson V-twin motorcycle was introduced in 1909.
The two technological achievements contrast with each other, but both were part of the rapidly changing environment here in Oregon. By 1917, world events were intruding more and more, and in that year one-third of all Harley-Davidson motorcycles made were sold to the U.S. military.
