This highly-detailed turn-of-the-last-century photo shows a residential area of Cascade Locks, the locks, and the river and hills to the north. Opened in 1896, the Cascade Canal and Locks project cost the U.S. Government more than $4 million and took nearly twenty years to complete.
By the time it was finished, railroad lines had been constructed and were being used more that steamboats to transport wheat downstream to the cities of Portland and Seattle. Despite this trend, work was later commenced on the Dalles-Celilo Canal, which opened in 1915, allowing ships for the first time to pass all the way up the Columbia with no portages.
