This rare, and detailed, early view of a village on the Washington side of The Dalles is printed from an original glass negative created by amateur photographer Willis Vail. Likely populated mostly by members of the Wishram tribe, this village served as a home base for fishing - similar to Celilo on the Oregon side.
Vail was a railroad employee who spent about a year in Oregon, and often captured images not being taken by local professional photographers.
