Benjamin Markham was partial to scenic views and portraits of Native Americans taken at his studio in The Dalles. He created a series of papoose photos, of which "Little Chief" is likely the best known. While originally published as postcards, Markham's views were detailed and of high quality. Little Chief is seen here strapped into his cradleboard. His composed look communicates strength and self-control, but you can see another side of him captured in the Related Photos section below. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
