A large crowd has turned out at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland on May 19, 1941, to celebrate the launch of the first of many Liberty Ships built here. "The Star of Oregon" was a most appropriate name for the first ship, as it was named after the first ship built in Oregon by American citizens, launched in 1842. A close look at detail view 1 reveals some excitement occurring as part of the christening, as we can see several men hurrying up the stairs to assist with the process.
