Joaquin Miller, "The Poet of the Sierras", was about 65 when he joined the Will G. Steel Excursion to Crater Lake. He was hired by Sunset Magazine to report on his trip. Never shy about publicity, Miller managed to find his way into a number of the Kiser brothers' photographs of the excursion. This particular photo is given its title in the excursion album, but from what I can tell Miller's literary output from the trip was prose - a lengthy article in Sunset named "Sea of Silence", published in the September 1904 issue.
