James Longmire first saw Mt. Rainier in 1853, when he guided the first wagon train to cross Naches Pass to the north. He settled with his family on the Yelm Prairie, where he had a good view of the mountain.
In 1883, at the age of 63, he was persuaded to climb the peak. It was at the end of this climb that he discovered the mineral springs that bear his name, and shortly after that he and his family created a small resort at that location.
