This highly detailed image of a twelve mule team is restored from an original glass negative by A. D. Browning, today known mostly for his postcards. He has captured the team's efforts, especially of the lead animals, as they begin to pull forward at the command of the driver.
Island Ranch, on the north shore of Malheur Lake, was established by partners John Devine and W. B. Todhunter. Devine was Harney County's first permanent white settler, arriving in 1869.
