This unusually early view of camping at the coast shows Happy Camp, a destination for tourists and vacationers since well before 1900.
About the time of this photo, in 1896, the camp was hit by a tidal wave.
Gradually more substantial buildings were added, including Homestead House, built in 1902.
You can still stay in one of the cabins at Happy Camp Hideaway today.
