Good Samaritan Hospital, Portland, Oregon - 1923

Portland's second hospital, founded in 1875, had grown a lot by the time this photograph was taken almost fifty years later. In its first year, the hospital cared for 51 patients. By 1920 that number had grown to 8345.

A newspaper article written when this photo was taken states that while the Episcopal Church was responsible for the hospital, "there is no distinction made as to race, religion or color, and a very large proportion of the service rendered, as high as one third, is charitable."
