This view of the southern part of the Fort Canby garrison also shows the extreme southern tip of Long Beach Peninsula, which divides Willapa Bay from the Pacific Ocean. A third named body of water, the Columbia River, flows into the ocean to the left of the peninsula. The garrison buildings for Fort Canby, founded during the Civil War as Fort Cape Disappointment, were located on the protected cape side of the peninsula. Cannons and a lighthouse were located on the ocean side, sited to protect the mouth of the Columbia River. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
