The December 21st, 1889 issue of The West Shore included this holiday-themed engraving of life in downtown Portland as its centerfold. The magazine, then in its fifteenth year, was published in Portland by L. Samuel, and described itself on its masthead as "An Illustrated Journal Published Weekly". W. H. Byrnes, the engraver, appears to have had a fondness for large eyes, as shown by several of his characters, especially the young girl in detail view 1. -- This engraving is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
