While some of the large fishwheels, and most of the permanently fixed fishwheels, were owned by corporations or other businesses, many families built and operated their own fishwheels on the Columbia River.

In this example, which also happens to be just a really nice photograph, it appears the whole family has turned out for a photo on their craft. Even the two dogs are visible in the rowboat in detail view 1. Unlike many smaller wheels, this one has a fully enclosed (and heated) cabin, which leads us to believe the owners sometimes lived on it during fishing season.
