This rare early view of downtown The Dalles is reproduced from an unusual outdoor CDV, a small-format card-mounted photo type popular in the 1860s and 1870s. Most CDVs (carte de visites), and indeed most early photographs, were portraits taken in the studio.
While not highly detailed, this view gives us an excellent feeling for what it would have been like to walk through the town at that time. Note the barber poles on both sides of the street at about the Baths sign; this was apparently the "personal grooming district".
