This deputy sheriff is stationed at the paymaster's window for a Josephine County hop ranch that employed over 500 workers for the three-week harvest season each year. Located near Grants Pass, the farm employed mostly migrant workers, many of them new to the west coast at this time near the end of the Great Depression.
You can see a poster advertising a "Hillbilly Ball" on the wall. Dorothea Lange, who took this photo as part of her survey of Oregon migrant workers, quotes the deputy as saying, "We have to kinda keep them scared as much as anything".
