Alpha Hall, the first residence hall on the Oregon Agricultural College campus, was constructed by Samuel G. McFadden in 1889. This photo was taken shortly thereafter by James G. Crawford as part of a series of views of public buildings in the Corvallis and Salem areas.
1868 is generally considered the founding year of Oregon Agricultural College, and hence, Oregon State University, as it was that year when the state legislature designated the existing Corvallis College as the official Agricultural College for the state of Oregon and thus the recipient of federal Land Grant income.
