Muir Glacier near Juneau, Alaska, now part of Glacier Bay National Park.
Dated 1887, this photograph was taken by Edward Partridge, who visited Alaska that year. His brother William also created a number of Alaska photos on his trip there from Portland in 1886. Named after John Muir, who visited here in 1878 and 1880, the glacier in this photo is much larger than you'd find today.
In the 1880s it was still a tidewater glacier, and calved (shed) icebergs from its 200 foot high front wall. Since 1941 the glacier has retreated more than seven miles. Ocean water now fills the valley, replacing the ice.
