The Light Battery training at Fort Stevens, near Astoria on the Oregon coast.
The Light Battery training at Fort Stevens, near Astoria on the Oregon coast.
Constructed during the civil war, Fort Stevens was one of three military installations guarding the mouth of the Columbia River. The other two, Fort Canby and Fort Columbia, were on the Washington side of the river.
A light battery included small cannons that could be moved as part of a mounted service. Heavy artillery, on the other hand, included larger cannons which were usually left at fortifications, or moved in siege trains.
