After spending their first winter in the Northwest in Oregon City in 1852, John Briscoe and his family moved to Pacific County in southwestern Washington Territory. Elected to the Territorial legislature in 1854 and 1856, Briscoe also served as deputy sheriff, and as a probate judge for eleven years.
Coming from a long-lived family, by 1899, Briscoe, born in 1812, was able to claim the status of being "the oldest white inhabitant living in Pacific County, save one".
