The lamprey is an ancient fish, which like the salmon returns from several years in the ocean to spawn in fresh-water rivers.
The lamprey is an ancient fish, which like the salmon returns from several years in the ocean to spawn in fresh-water rivers. Like the salmon, it was and is prized by Native American tribes who catch it using dip nets (and sometimes by hand) along the Columbia and Willamette Rivers.
This is the earliest photo I've seen of it being caught. Note in the lower left, and in detail view 2, the lamprey crawling over the rocks as they make their way upstream.
