This chromolithograph print was published in 1873, after an allegorical 1872 painting of the same name by John Gast.
This chromolithograph print was published in 1873, after an allegorical 1872 painting of the same name by John Gast. The image, sometimes referred to as Manifest Destiny, was still very much in use by the time of the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland in 1905.
Some of us today might find it scary. You can see the artist's depiction of native people and even animals fleeing upon the approach of farmers, miners, and railroads. And the depiction promises that by carrying a school book and stringing telegraph lines, Progress will bring light to the darkened skies of the West.
