A great view by Watkins of the upper portage railroad on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, and the bluffs of Upper Cape Horn.
A great view by Watkins of the upper portage railroad on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, and the bluffs of Upper Cape Horn. From its opening in 1863 until the full railway line from Portland east was completed in 1882, this 14-mile-long railroad carried freight on a section of the Columbia River not passable by steamboats.
Note that the name of Upper Cape Horn given at that time is no longer regularly used, and this rock formation is not the same as the current Cape Horn downstream on the Washington side.
