This photo was taken by Watkins during his trip to Oregon in 1867. The Oregon Iron Company had just opened the smelter that year. While the first smelter was not financially successful, a second, larger furnace built in 1888 prospered for a few years. The base of the furnace for the first smelter can still be seen at George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego.
