Colonel George Wright graduated from West Point in 1827, and spent almost forty years as a military officer, much of it in the Pacific Northwest. Before coming west, he was involved with campaigns against the Pawnee and Seminole Indians, and was known for his ability to reach resolutions with a minimum of casualties.
Wounded in the Mexican War in 1845, he was helped off the battlefield by Isaac Stevens, later the first governor of Washington. He spend the next twenty years in California and the Pacific Northwest, and died at sea, along with his wife, when he was traveling to take up his new post as Commander of the Department of Columbia in Fort Vancouver.
