A group of men and women work their way up Paradise Glacier on the southeast flank of Mt. Rainier. Photographer Asahel Curtis has succeeded better than most at revealing the faces and clothing of the climbers - a challenging task due to the bright sunlight and the technology of that time.
Because of his success, we can see several strategies the climbers have employed to deal with that bright sunlight. In detail view 1, a man and a woman have several types of early sunscreen products applied to their faces. In detail view 2, at least one of the women is wearing a veil in addition to her wide-brimmed hat.
