At the time this snowy portrait of Clatskanie was taken, the town was going through a growth spurt, more than doubling in size since 1900 (to about 700 inhabitants). Located on the Clatskanie River (visible in the foreground of detail view 1), the town is 35 miles east of Astoria, and several miles above where the river empties into the Columbia.

Detail view 2 shows the Flippin House, built in 1898, now known as the Castle, which currently houses the local senior center. To its right is the school.
