Built in 1889 on 7th Street between Monroe and Madison, Central School replaced South School, which had burned in 1887, and North School, which was turned into a private residence. This photo was taken shortly after it opened by James G. Crawford as part of a series of public buildings in the Willamette Valley. A two-story frame structure, Central School featured eight large classrooms, and through 1894 was open Tuesday through Saturday, to allow the girls to help their mothers on Monday wash days. The school was dismantled in 1935, and today its site is the location of Central Park. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
