The Cascade Rapids on the Columbia River were one of two sections of the river that blocked passage for steamboats, the other being The Dalles. Until Cascade Locks were completed in 1896 cargo and passengers were transferred from ships below the rapids to other ships above by a portage railroad, seen on the far side of the river. Also visible in detail view 1 is the old blockhouse, built in 1856 during the Indian Wars.
