This is an early small steam donkey, similar to one on display at the Coos County Museum in North Bend.
This is an early small steam donkey, similar to one on display at the Coos County Museum in North Bend. It appears to be made by John Dolbeer, who invented the horizontal reel steam donkey for logging in 1881, in Crescent City. The single reel design requires a horse or ox to reel the line out.
It was a slow process until the lead and return system came into play on later models.
