Early tintypes can rarely be attributed to specific photographers. We know this view was by Joseph Buchtel, as the original has an advertisement for his Salem "branch gallery" glued to its back.

The original is a full plate tintype, a rare size as most photographers made multiple images on each 6 by 8 tin plate. While tintypes were less expensive than earlier daguerreotypes, the full plate size indicates the client was likely well-to-do.

We are confident this photo was created in about 1862, as Buchtel's Salem gallery was only open from about 1862 to 1863. The military uniform for this unidentified boy was inspired by the Civil War going on at that time. If you can identify the boy, please let us know.
