An unnamed vaudeville performer is captured in his blackface persona in this publicity photo from Portland at the turn of the last century. Blackface was initially popularized by travelling minstrel shows, and from 1840 to 1890, minstrel shows were the most popular form of entertainment in America. Often the costumes included ragged clothing, which can be seen in this image, especially in detail view 2.
