The Cascade Locks were completed in 1896, eight years before this photo was taken by Benjamin A. Gifford. They allowed steamboats on the Columbia River to bypass the Cascades Rapids, and thus opened a passage from the lower parts of the river as far as The Dalles. The Bailey Gatzert, shown here, was a popular steamboat that for many years ran between Portland and The Dalles. She was known for making the trip from The Dalles to Portland in five hours.
