Applegate Peak is located on the south rim of Crater Lake, just to the east of the slightly shorter Garfield Peak. It forms the western limb of Sun Notch. It was named by William Gladstone Steel in 1869 to honor Captain O. C. Applegate, who assisted in the exploration of the Crater Lake area.
Applegate lived most of his long life in the area, where he served in the Modoc War, was in charge of the Klamath Indian Reservation, and was an editor of the Ashland Tidings.
