State Street is located near a lot of water even in normal times, with the Willamette River at its west end, the mouth of Pringle Creek to its south, and Mill Creek paralleling it a bit further east.

In this photo we see it in not so normal times. Actually, I'm not too sure where State Street is under all that water. The 1890 flood was a major event; it was the largest flood Salem had experienced since 1861. Myra Sperry, who publicized herself as "Sperry the Artist", captured both this view of the flood and two others seen in Related Items below.
