Details

This is the second USS Charleston. It was an important ship - the first US protected cruiser to be built. Lacking experience in building steel ships, the design was commissioned by a British company, though the ship itself was constructed in the US. Launched in San Francisco in 1888, she was wrecked near the Philippines in 1899. The first USS Charleston? It was a galley - powered by oarsmen - used by the US Navy from 1798 to 1802.
