Looking upstream just above the locks themselves, we see log rafts waiting their turn to travel through the locks on their way to sawmills further down the river. Detail view 2 shows a sternwheeler docked at the paper mill, perhaps to pick up paper for delivery to Portland and beyond.
By this time the west side of the falls had been fully industrialized for decades. Smokestacks and electric lines rise above the buildings used to produce paper and generate power.
