Looking upstream along the Tooth Bridge at the 5-mile-long portage railroad on the Oregon side of the Cascades. This was Oregon's first railroad, opened in 1858 using mule power, and upgraded in 1862 by adding steel bands on the inside of the wooden rails to accommodate the Oregon Pony, the Northwest's first steam locomotive.
The Pony is now preserved at Cascade Locks. Before this photo was taken in 1867, the Pony had been moved to San Francisco. Other photos from that year show horse-drawn cars still being used on the railroad.
