This view of Sheridan illustrates the rough "frontier town" look of many Oregon towns in the 1880s, before the coming of electricity - or paved streets.
This view of Sheridan illustrates the rough "frontier town" look of many Oregon towns in the 1880s, before the coming of electricity - or paved streets. As is common in early town views, a group of boys has gathered to observe the photographer and to become part of his photo, as shown in detail view 1.
The small boy in the white shirt is Thomas Whitmer, son of the owner of Whitmer & Graves Hardware. That's likely his father sitting in the chair next to him. It's also probable that the seated man reading a book is one of the Churchman brothers that owns the drugstore, and the man in the doorway on the right is one of the Kinney brothers that owns the blacksmith and wagon shop.
