Two gents in a rowboat make their way down Washington Street at Second in June of 1894, after the Columbia River flooded The Dalles at its highest recorded level. On the corner we can see the Chronicle Building, where the Dalles Chronicle newspaper was published. At that time a young enterprise, having started in 1890, it eventually outlasted all its competitors to become The Dalles' current daily paper.
In detail view 2, a hand-painted sign informs us that H. H. Campbell Grocer, in the foreground, has been removed to the Baptist Church due to the flood.
