This photo of the Needles, on the railroad line up the south side of the Columbia Gorge, was taken by William H. Partridge not long before he moved back to the East Coast. Detail view 1 shows the engine approaching us from the east, while detail view 2 gives us a better look at the tracks and the edge of the Columbia River close to the roadbed.
These days the Needles still stand, but both the railroad and the new highway have been located to their left on fill in the river. You have to look quickly to see them as you pass by.
