The Dalles in the 1870s, looking west from its "back yard".
This early photo of The Dalles looks west from the rural eastern edge of town, across the business district to the docks and Columbia River. We know it's from the 1870s from J. G. Crawford's Harrisburg address on the stereo card.
As in many early Oregon towns, the fences are meant more to keep livestock out than to keep them in, as you can see cows browsing in the streets in detail view 1.
