Drivers and crews prepare for the start of the Tacoma Montamarathon, a 300 mile race held at the Tacoma Speedway. Detail View 1 shows the eventual winner, Eddie Rickenbacker, standing next to his number 1 Maxwell in the middle of the front row. Rickenbacker later became known as the "Ace of Aces" for shooting down 25 German planes during World War I. He returned to Tacoma as a referee in 1919 and 1921.
