In 1868, Charles Hanson, a Danish sea captain and California mill owner, opened this Tacoma Mill and wharf. He was the first in Tacoma to ship internationally - initially to Peru and Australia. When Hanson died in 1898, about the time this photo was taken, management of the mill was passed on to his son.
The mill closed in 1913, and the vacant building was destroyed by fire in 1922.
