In a great example of the road builders' art from eighty years ago, we see how the engineers have negotiated their way down a steep slope in the Siskiyous.
In addition to being good engineering, the back and forth pattern of the road makes for great composition in this photo by Frank Patterson.
I've given the location as Josephine County, but it's possible the switchbacks are actually just over the border into California.
